CMA CGM, Evergreen deliver ULCVs as east-west capacity rises

CMA CGM and Evergreen Marine delivered two ultra-large container vessels — the 24,212 TEU CMA CGM Pantheon and 16,556 TEU Ever Even — in late July 2026, part of a broader wave of seven newbuild deliveries across carriers including Hapag-Lloyd, Zim, ONE, and Wan Hai. These vessels collectively added over 120,000 TEU of capacity to east-west trades, with deployments spanning Asia-Europe, transatlantic, transpacific, and Red Sea routes. The influx arrives amid falling spot rates and tightening capacity discipline, as carriers adjust fleet allocations in response to El Niño–driven Panama Canal constraints and persistent Red Sea disruptions.

The influx arrives amid falling spot rates and tightening capacity discipline, as carriers adjust fleet allocations in response to El Niño–driven Panama Canal constraints and persistent Red Sea disruptions.

According to theloadstar.com, container shipping capacity on east-west tradelanes increased significantly over a two-week period following the delivery of seven new ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs) across multiple carriers and shipyards.

Major ULCV deliveries hit Asia-Europe and transatlantic routes

CMA CGM took delivery of the 24,212 TEU CMA CGM Pantheon on 24 July 2026 from Yangzijiang Shipbuilding — the second of ten Jacques Saade-class LNG-powered vessels ordered in mid-2023. Each vessel features 1,600 reefer plugs. The ship joins CMA CGM’s FAL1 service — branded NEU4 by Ocean Alliance partners — operating between Asia and Europe with a mixed fleet including ships ranging from 21,000 to 24,000 TEU and ten vessels of approximately 17,000 TEU.

Also entering service this week, Evergreen Marine accepted the 16,556 TEU Ever Even from Samsung Heavy Industries. It is the sixth of 16 methanol dual-fuel vessels ordered from the South Korean shipbuilder in mid-2023. The vessel replaces the 11,800 TEU Ever Fit on the Ocean Alliance’s NEU7 service (marketed by Evergreen as CES), deploying a fleet that includes 20,000 TEU ships plus two each of 14,000 TEU and 15,000 TEU capacity.

Newbuilds deployed across transatlantic, intra-Asia, and transpacific loops

Last week, shipowner Danaos delivered the 8,258 TEU Express Santorini, the first of seven vessels contracted for long-term charter to Hapag-Lloyd. During the peak Asia-Europe shipping season, it will initially serve the Gemini Cooperation’s AE1/NE2 route before being reassigned to the transatlantic TA2/AL3 service.

TMS Group, led by George Economou, took delivery of the 7,900 TEU Agate — the first of four vessels ordered at HJ Shipbuilding — for long-term charter to Zim. Although initially slated for intra-Asia ad hoc sailings, Zim will phase the vessel into its Central China Xpress (ZX2) transpacific loop by the end of July 2026.

Meanwhile, ONE received the 13,932 TEU ONE Summit from Imabari Shipbuilding — the 11th of 15 sister ships commissioned for its Asia-US East Coast EC3 loop, operated jointly with Premier Alliance partners Yang Ming and HMM. Taiwanese carrier Wan Hai also accepted the 8,710 TEU Wan Hai 903 from Hyundai Samho — the third of four vessels ordered in 2024 — destined for its standalone Far East–Red Sea–East Mediterranean service.

Capacity injection amid cooling demand and rate declines

The wave of ULCV deliveries coincides with a broad softening in spot freight rates across key east-west corridors. According to the report, container spot rates on the main east-west ocean trades all declined over the past week, including on the Asia-Mediterranean, Asia-North Europe, and Asia-US East Coast routes. This follows earlier observations that ocean capacity is rising while demand is cooling — prompting analysts to note that “the market is starting to turn.”

The timing underscores structural shifts in vessel deployment strategies: carriers are not only adding capacity but reallocating assets across geographies — such as moving vessels from peak-season Asia-Europe services to transatlantic or Red Sea routes — reflecting evolving trade flows and congestion dynamics. With Panama Canal restrictions anticipated due to El Niño and ongoing Red Sea disruptions, flexibility in fleet routing has become operationally critical.

NRF: Early peak shipping season to subside in September

The National Retail Federation (NRF) and Hackett Associates report that the early peak shipping season is ending, with U.S. port imports expected to decline for the rest of 2026. May was the busiest month at 2.24 million TEU. Tariff changes and supply chain disruptions drove retailers to pull forward orders. Consumer spending remains resilient. Full-year 2026 imports are projected at 25.5 million TEU, up 0.1% from 2025.

TSMC revenue up 33.7%, ASML ships 86 lithography machines

TSMC reported $40.2 billion in Q2 2026 revenue — up 33.7% year-on-year — with 2-nm process contributing 3% of sales. ASML shipped 86 new lithography machines in the same quarter, boosting revenue to €9.32 billion ($10.69 billion). TSMC holds 73% of the global foundry market, while ASML’s EUV tools remain essential for sub-3-nm chip production. Both companies’ five-year net income grew over 90% (ASML) and 251% (TSMC). TSMC’s $100 billion Arizona expansion will support 2-nm manufacturing and advanced packaging.
