Hyundai and Huayou Forge Southeast Asia’s First Closed-Loop EV Battery Recycling System in Indonesia
Hyundai Motor Group and Huayou Recycling have launched Southeast Asia’s first integrated EV battery recycling system in Indonesia—anchored at the HLI Green Power 40 GWh battery plant in Karawang. This partnership transforms Indonesia from a raw nickel exporter into a circular economy hub, processing manufacturing scrap into black mass with >95% nickel recovery. Strategically timed ahead of EU Battery Regulation deadlines and U.S. IRA compliance mandates, the initiative addresses critical gaps in regional end-of-life infrastructure while establishing traceability standards for ASEAN. With plans to expand to end-of-life battery collection by 2026 and scale production to 100 GWh by 2028, the venture signals a geopolitical recalibration of battery supply chain sovereignty.
